In the world of painting, it becomes very hard to determine what we feel a room needs. Too small, and the artistic addition can feel swallowed by the size of the room. Too large, though, and it becomes a noose around the neck of any other form of creativity that is installed.
As such, it becomes very important to take some time to master the importance of determining large paintings. It will take you a lot of time and patience to know if you are making the right call, but large paintings – anything over 36” – can be an excellent addition to bring a room to life with intent.
Typically, you would be looking for a room that has a wall which the large painting is going to take around 2/3-3/4 of the area. This can make it easy for you to make sure that any room that has these specific diameter opportunities can enjoy a larger painting.
However, large paintings need to be seen from a fair distance to make sure that you get the full effect for the image. If you feel like it fits on the wall but you are less than, say, 12ft away from the painting, then it might not be the right pick for that particular room. You want to be putting a large painting into a room that has a wall that is both large enough and has nothing blocking the image. The painting should become the focal point.
This is why large abstract paintings work best in large office spaces, helping to improve on the working atmosphere while adding a focal point that brings some colour into the room, improving efficiency.
Typically, large abstract paintings work best in rooms such as living areas, study rooms and – in the right setting – a dining room. The typical set list of rooms to consider, though, tends to be built around the idea of rooms where people are going to be productive. The more inspiration that we can have in our productivity, the better for everyone!
