THOUGHTS ON PAINTING

With the combination of negatively associated fruits such as apples and lemons, the Antics and Fruits painting suggests straying far from one's deeply held beliefs. This painting's apples symbolize temptation and desire, something that is difficult for many people to not succumb to. It also represents sin, which contrasts against the goblet found to the right of the fruit. The goblet has long since been a symbol of the Christian church, allowing these apples to represent disenchantment with their faith, perhaps going against one's belief system, while the lemon represents the bitterness and disappointment in oneself that is felt after the fact.
